There were some surprises in some of the front boards in the bigger age categories. The most flamboyant of these upsets were in the U-18 general category where the second seed Azerbaijan IM Nijat Abasov lost with the black pieces to Viacheslav Kulakov of Russia. As it was a coincidence in the U-18 girls category also the second seed WGM Olga Girya lost with the white pieces to WFM Jovana Eric of Serbia.

A wonderful surprise for the host country was in the U-10 girls’ category where Sevval Dogan beat her WCM Azeri opponent Aydan Hikmet Qizi Hojjatova with the white pieces to advance to the third board in the third round.
