WYCC 2009 R08: Getting Close to the End

After the 8th round of the World Youth Chess Championship, the important results, the players playing for top positions and the general view are as follows:

In the U-8 general category the second seed Iranian Aryan Gholami left the first board with a half point whereas the American Tanuj Vasudeva won his match and with these results they share the first and second places on the standings. They are followed by Iranian Mohammad Amin Tabatabaei, Kazakh Ramazan Zhalmakhanov and Indian Guha Mitrabha with 6.5 points each. In the girls category Indian Muthyala Bansi Prathima beat Chinese Ruotong Chu who had 6.5 points before this round and this puts the Indian player still at the third place on the standings after Samritha Palakollu from USA and Chinese Chu.

Hard to play against this young and colorful lady


In the U-10 general category the Armenian player with the black pieces Mikayel Mkrtchyan had to be satisfied with a half point, where on the second board the Chinese player Jinshi Bai beat his opponent to conquer the top place on the standings. Mkrtchyan and Indian Murali Karthikeyan follow on the second and third places respectively. The girls category saw the only player with perfect score in the tournament Gunay Mammadzada beat her opponent WFM Anna Vasenina from Russia to continue her undefeated regime. Xingliang Anna Wang from England and Irina Drogovoz from Russia come after her on the standings.

In the U-12 general category on the first board Russian CM Antipov and Vietnamese FM Tran battled it out to a draw while on the second board American Jarod M Pamatmat won with the white pieces and reached 7 points. Thus Antipov and Pamatmat share the first and second places. The couple is pursued by Indian Suri Vaibhav and Vietnamese FM Tuan Minh Tran with 6.5 points each. The girls category with Russian WFM Anna Styazhkina and Iranian WFM Sarasadat Khademalsharieh winning their matches has them both with 7 points on the first and second places respectively.

One of the most warmhearted ladies in WYCC - Sophia Millar from Bahamas

In the U-14 general category there was an upset where the strong IM Jorge Cori lost with the white pieces to his Polish opponent Kamil Dragun. After his first loss in the tournament Cori shares the first place with Danish FM Mads Andersen, Indian FM Krishna G V Sai and Polish Kamil Dragun in that order. In the girls category the Israeli WFM Marsel Efroimski got another point to reach 7.5 points and lead her group. After the decisive results on the second and third boards, Kazakh WCM Dinara Saduakassova, American Alena Kats and Polish WFM Aleksandra Lach line up on the standings.

In the U-16 general category the Indian stars IM Santosh Gujrathi Vidit and IM S P Sethuraman got decisive results to enter the 9th round with 7 points each and share the first and second places. Polish GM Dariusz Swiercz and French FM Maxime Lagarde share the third and fourth spots with 6.5 points. The Peruvian WIM T Deysi Cori of the girls category continues her stable performance by winning again in this round and leads the field with 7.5 points. WIM Meri Arabidze and WIM Nizami Qizi Kazimova Narmin tries to catch her on the run for the first place.

In the U-18 category Spanish GM Ivan Lopez Salgado drew with IM Kacper Piorun to sit on the top spot together with him and the pair is pursued by local player IM Mustafa Yilmaz who won his game with the black pieces today. Still leading the girls category is the first seed Anastasia Savina from Russia who has 7 points and the second seed WGM Olga Girya with 6.5 points and local hero Kubra Ozturk with 6 points are on her back for the gold medal.
